KARACHI – A day after the suspension of the Lyari operation, the crime graph shot up in the city on Saturday with seven people falling prey to targeted killings. In the first incident, son of local PPP leader along with his nephew were killed in a drive-by shooting near Kati Pahari area. The ruling PPP described it as ‘targeted attack’. The killing triggered arson activities, paralysing daily life in the strife-hit locality within the remits of the Pirabad Police Station.The attackers, who were on a bike, opened indiscriminate fire at a roadside poultry meat shop, leaving 29-year-old Muzamil Khan dead and 23-year-old Imran Khan critically injured. The firing caused serious injuries to a 30-year-old pedestrian, namely Ghayas Rasheed.“Both the injured were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they died during treatment,” said DSP Tariq Malik, the area’s sub-divisional police officer (SDPO). “The attackers fired over a dozen bullets.”He said the victim was the owner of the shop and his nephew used to work with him. The third victim, police said, was employed at a printing press. The firing sowed fear in the vulnerable area that had been hit by violence, assaults and killings mainly in a year or so. Before the police and Rangers moved in, traders pulled down the shutters of their shops and transport was taken off the road.“Muzamil was the eldest son of Miskeen Khan, the known area leader of PPP,” said DSP Malik who was blank about the motive behind the brutal attack. A massive contingent of the Rangers and police was called in, but the situation remained tense till late evening hours. In another incident, a supervisor of a private airline was shot dead near Behria Graveyard, Dalmia, within the jurisdiction of the Shahrah-e-Faisal Police Station. The incident took place in the wee hours of Saturday, when 58-year-old Javed Akhtar was returning home after completing his duty. Unidentified armed men appeared on the scene and opened fire on him, causing his instant death. The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities. Police officials said the victim was a resident of FC area, Liaquatabad. They suspected that he might have been killed over personal enmity.Separately, an owner of a general store was gunned down in Railways Colony within the remits of the Jackson Police Station. The victim, 40-year-old Abdullah Khan, son of Ameer Khan, was sitting at his store when unidentified armed men attacked him. He received a bullet in the head and died on the spot. The body was shifted to the CHK. Police officials said the victim had enmity with someone according to his family. A case has been registered against the unidentified killers on the complaint of the victim’s brother.Separately, a gunnysack body was recovered in the precincts of the Aram Bagh Police Station. Identity of the victim could not be ascertained. The victim had been shot in the abdomen and appeared to be Baloch-speaking. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities and later moved to the Edhi Morgue for identification. Police have registered a case against unidentified killers.In Lines Area, an armed clash between two groups left four people injured. Office of one of the parties was also set on fire in an early morning attack. The injured political workers were identified as 48-year-old Naheed, Nusrat, 42, Mehran, 32, and 28-year-old.Separately, a teenage boy was shot dead in front of his apartment Maymar Complex super Highway in the precincts of Sohrab Goth area police station. The victim 19-year Jawed Khan was the resident of Maymar Complex when unidentified men targeted him. DSP Iftikhar Lodhi said victim was the mechanic and hailed from Peshawar and might be personal enmity is motive behind the incident.
