Opp flays removal of ZAB's quotes

KARACHI - Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-backed Awam Dost Group in City Council had vehemently protested, staged sit-in and walked out from the house over the removal of historical quotes of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto from the famous Teen Talwar during the City council session on Monday. The opposition leader of Awam Dost group in City council Muhammad Jumman Darwan said on a point of order that Saddar Town Nazim Muhammad Dilawar had deliberately removed historical quotes embossed on brass plates and were installed on the three swords at roundabout in Clifton and has replaced them with the names of Haq Parast martyrs. Darwan warned that such an act of Sadar Town nazim could lead an open confrontation between the PPP and the MQM and would tarnish PPPs efforts for keeping and promoting peace and harmony in the City, he said. He also severely criticised the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) for making attempts to take the credit of citys development and claimed that the CDGK has always been ignoring Sindh and federal governments role and financial shares. Darwan demanded of the acting convener of the session and senior presiding officer that he should take initiatives for the restoration of original metal embossed quotes of the PPPs founder and former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto within 15 minutes or else the opposition would walk-out until the grievances were addressed. He claimed that ZA Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari have served the country and in particular their role for converting Karachi into the City of lights but the CDGK has deliberately ignored the outskirts of the City depriving them of due shares from everything. Darwan refuted claims that the CDGK has developed the City as he offered details of development schemes and funds released. He said that present Sindh government, under PPPs rule during the fiscal year 2008-09, had spent Rs5.93 billion for 90 development schemes of the City. He further added that the Sindh government has, for the fiscal year 2009-10, allocated Rs9.6 billion for 130 major development schemes but the CDGK has regretfully claimed the ownership of these development schemes despite the fact that the CDGK had not added even a single penny to these development schemes. He also refuted CDGKs claim for water scheme in Baba Bhit in Keamari Town as he claimed that the Sindh government, during 2006-09, had spent Rs300 million under annual development programme (ADP). The water schemes in Citys islands had cost the Sindh government worth Rs390.40 million while the CDGK did not invest anything except making false claims. Darwan regretted that the CDGK had paid gratitude to Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf for arranging funds for avenue from Super Highway to Toll Plaza and denied the Sindh governments shares. He claimed that the Sindh government, during 2008-09, had spent Rs200 million on that avenue under ADP while overall Rs820 million were spent. However, the CDGK tried to own the credit while the Sindh government was completely by-passed in this regard. Treasury member Arshad Qureshi said that funds released to CDGK either by the provincial or federal government were not a charity but it was the right of the citizens of the City. He demanded that the government should immediately release 2.5 per cent share from the sales tax as was promised. Later the session was adjourned.
