CS directs reactivation of waste-to-energy project

KARACHI - Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman has directed all the departments and stakeholders concerned to expedite efforts for alternative energy production using Cattle Colony, Landhi, as a significant source for this purpose. He was presiding over an important meeting of the officials of the Sindh government and the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) here on Thursday. The chief secretary directed the Planning and Development (PD) Department to ensure conducting a comprehensive study and preparations of feasible plan for the reactivation of project for waste to energy project in Cattle Colony in Landhi Town. The Sindh government is pursuing alternate energy production project as massive population of Livestock, considering to be 945. 301 million, in various cattle colonies established in various parts of the City including the biggest one is the Landhi Cattle Colony can play an important role in the power production through alternate energy project. The meeting discussed at length that the cattle colonies across the City having the population in millions of buffalos and cows, which according to a study daily produce 9,453,010 Kg fresh dung, which can be used in the alternate energy project for getting power and gas. Only in Landhi Cattle Colony, there are 342.500 million buffalos and cows to fulfil the need of milk and other dairy products of the City. Landhi, is an important place which can be used as a significant mean for alternate energy production, thus, all respective nation building department, stakeholders, should play their due role in gearing up the alternate energy production efforts, one of the participant of the meeting said. On the occasion Secretary Environment and Alternative Energy Mir Hussain Ali, in a briefing informed the meeting that M/s Empower, a New Zealand firm, in collaboration with the National Engineering Corporation (NEC) had implemented a Waste to Energy Project at Landhi Cattle Colony, whereby 25 MW of energy could be generated by using the dung of over 400,000 cattle head. He said that the AEDB had suggested the EPA reactivation of the project. According to a conservative estimate, the livestock population through Peri-Urban dairy colonies is about 9.453 million including Landhi Cattle Colony and surrounding areas 3.425 million, Bilal Cattle Colony and surroundings 4.4427 million, Surjani Cattle Colony 1.790 million, Al-Momin Dairy Colony 1.5575 million, Nagori Dairy Colony 1.2789 million, Baldia, Lyari and surroundings 0.30 million, scattered Dairy Farms in different town 2.121 million. Shoukat Mukhtar, Joint Secretary, Karachi Dairy Farmers Association raised some reservations and DCO Karachi Javed Hanif Khan informed that the land under reference is CDGKs property and all out efforts were being made to keep it free from encroachment. The Chief Secretary directed the officer concerned to visit Cattle Colony Landhi and submit a report within 2 days. It was decided that a study would be conducted and terms of reference prepared by a committee comprising representatives concerned. The Chief Secretary directed the P&D Department to ensure early preparation of plan for reactivation of the project within a week.
