19 killed as rains lash Sindh, relief operation underway

At least 19 persons were killed and several others injured in various rain related incidents as torrential rains continued to lash different parts of Sindh. Army, Navy personnel and other organizations are busy in relief operation. In Samanabad area of Mirpur Khas district, roof of a dilapidated house caved in due to heavy rains. Five members of the family including a couple and three children were killed in the roof collapse incident. Meanwhile 14 others including women and children were killed in separate rain related incidents in different localities of the province. According to details due to heavy downpour, outfall drains (NBOD) played havoc in Badin inundating more than 100 more villages. The Army and Navy personnel reached the affected areas and started shifting stranded people especially from coastal belt to safer places. The district administration has set up 142 relief camps at different points to accommodate more than 40,000 displaced people. Floods in sem nullahs in different areas of Sindh have also adversely affected the residential houses, agricultural lands, cultivated crops and communication links besides power supply. In tehsil Sehwan and Manjhand of Jamshoro, power supply has not been restored for more than one and half week as rains have destroyed 18 electric polls of the main supply line. In Jhanga Bajara areas more than 80 villages have been inundated due to flash flood caused by heavy rains. Rain water swept away seven bridges near Bhait Jail, disrupting the land link between different areas. Foreign companies engaged in exploration of oil and gas in different areas in the said locality have to face difficulties due to destruction of link roads and bridges. Roof of six barracks of District Jail Sanghar also caved in due to rain torrents but the prisoners remained unhurt.
