KARACHI - Police managed to foil back-to-back militants’ two attempts of blowing up Mominabad Police Station with bomb here on Sunday.
Being informed, police found a packet placed close to wall of Mominabad Police Station in Orangi Town. SHO Zahid Shah while quoting witnesses said that at least two suspects fled after throwing some suspicious packet concealed in a blanket. Following the information, a bomb disposable squad team reached at the site and examined the packet. After half hour’s hectic efforts, the BDS team managed to defuse the 5-kg bomb.
Following the situation, police immediately got the police station vacated, shifting the prisoners to other locations. After some eight hours, cops found another bomb from the bushes outside the same police station. “We were busy cutting the bushes off for security measures when we found another bomb,” said a duty officer. “The bomb was covered in a shirt.”
On this, the BD experts were again called who defused the bomb. They said both the bombs defused were of the same type. The discovery of the second bomb also exposed lack of security at the police station. However, District West SSP Irfan Baloch denied it and said it seemed that both the bombs were planted together in different spots of the police station. The officer added that security measures were being taken by increasing height of the police station walls and erecting barricades.
Parts of District West, especially Orangi Town and Manghopir and their surrounding areas are known as the strongholds of the militants who carry out their activities including target killings of police and Rangers. The law enforcers have also arrested dozens of militants during raids and operations on daily basis. Over 70 policemen have so far been lost their lives in the first six months of the present year.
