KARACHI - Despite many deaths in incidents of rail track accidents, so far no initiative has been taken to construct boundary walls near the congested residential areas, closer to the railway tracks. As per detail, due to the negligence of the authorities concerned, the railway tracks are still considered as big threats for the Karachities as neither the federal government has fulfilled its promise to release the grants of Rs 20million for the construction of safety walls, nor the Railway Karachi Division has put any effort to get the said funds. The lives of the residents living in the adjoining areas of railway tracks are at risk as a number of people have lost their lives after being hit by trains. The previous Railway Ministry Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed had announced Rs20million for the construction of safety walls as well as other coming ministers also made such announcements to release funds for the same purpose. Drigroad is regarded as the most dangerous area as most of the incidents have occurred there. Majority of victims were children who were killed while playing outside their residences when they were crushed to death by trains. Other major areas with reports of similar incidents include Malir halt, Malir City, Mehmoodabad, Landhi Quidabadi, Karachi Airport, City Station, Baloch Colony and several others. It must be mentioned here that the Railway Ministry had also announced in the collaboration with the different local governments to chalk out the strategy to build boundary walls and fence along-sides of the railway tracks in the county. Earlier, Mir Mohammad Khaskheli Division Superintendent of Pakistan Railway had showed his helplessness saying that he could do nothing until the Railway gets the announced grants. Meanwhile, the people living in the adjoining localities of railway tracks are demanding for construction of safety walls. Asif Raheem, a resident of railway colony told The Nation that the residents of the area live in a panic as their young ones go outdoors for playing. Naeem Ahmed, who owns a shop in Kalapul Mehmoodabad said that due to fear of the following incident, the business activities have been affected also. Similarly, some other people of such localities have also expressed their concerns over government's apathy to the situation and demanded the government to take immediate steps in this regard.
