'Some PPP elements' patronising Lyari gangsters: MQM

KARACHI - Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee Deputy Convener and Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr Farooq Sattar on Sunday said the MQM had not reached the point of no return as far as relations with the PPP were concerned, while his party wanted immediate steps for the arrest of culprits involved in the Lyari gang war, which so far has claimed lives of several innocent people. He categorically told that now the ball was in the PPPs court and it was up to its leadership to sustain their relations with the MQM. The MQM is supporting the government and wants it (government) to arrest and give severe punishment to terrorists involved in the target-killing of MQM workers, said Dr Farooq Sattar while addressing a Press conference. MQM Rabita Committee members Sagheer Ahmed Ansari, Kanwar Khalid Younis, Shoaib Ahmed Bukhari and others were also present on the occasion. Dr Farooq Sattar urged President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to take serious notice of some PPP elements backing to what he called the Lyari gang war terrorists and so-called Peoples Peace Committee, requesting them to give up some PPP elements support to these criminals. He said over three MQM activists including Ikhlaq Hussain, Mohammad Zeeshan and Mubeen Sheikh were killed by the terrorists on Sunday He further demanded of the President and Prime Minister to take immediate notice of the killing and kidnapping of Urdu-speaking people and asked them to take stern action against the terrorists who were behind this deadly gang war. Dr Sattar said Urdu-speaking people were being killed by the gangsters of Lyari through a conspiracy, alleging that some elements of the PPP were supporting the Lyari gang war terrorists. He said terrorists of the Lyari gang war were attempting to spread their criminal activities to other parts of the City and wanted to seize the metropolis. Offering MQMs support to the law enforcement agencies in order to restore peace in the metropolis, he demanded of the government to apprehend the members of Lyari gang war. The Rabita Committee Deputy Convenor asked the PPP to make it clear whether it was formally associated with the Peoples Peace Committee of Lyari or not, saying that despite their statement, the Committee members were present at the Press conference of PPP MPAs on Saturday. The MQM leader stated that their patience and restraint should not be misconstrued as their weakness, saying that his party workers had remained calm on the directives of MQM chief Altaf Hussain. He said the growing activities of the Lyari gang war terrorists were an attempt to cover up the failure of the Sindh Home Department regarding the Muharram 10 mayhem, saying that people were aware of the failure of the Home Department. Dr Sattar regretted that despite being key member of coalition government, the MQM was in an awkward and a strange position, saying that they (government) had not taken the MQM into confidence about Karachis law and order situation. We pointed out to the government about the criminals involved in the killing of innocent people but it (government) has failed to arrest the terrorists of Lyari gang war and Peoples Peace Committee, he added. He claimed that the terrorists of the gang war were enjoying the support of some elements in the PPP-led Sindh government, adding that a few leaders of the PPP were giving the target-killing incidents colour of ethnic clashes.
