KARACHI – Some unidentified gunmen on Tuesday killed the brother of former member provincial assembly of Muttahida Qaumi Movement here in Sher Shah Market.According to details, at least two armed culprits, riding a motorcycle, resorted to indiscriminate firing in Sher Shah Market in presence of heavy police deployment.Gunmen barged into the victim’s warehouse of iron sheets, situated close to the Jahanabad police post, and targeted both brothers and managed to flee while police deployed on the scene did not reacted. The victims were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where according to doctors, Qarar Ali, 60, died on the way to hospital while Zakir Ali, 42, admitted with critical wounds. Score of people including MQM leader Wasey Jalil also reached the hospital. The mob while blaming the Lyari gangsters condemned the incident and shouted slogans.The deceased was the eldest among ten siblings and running his family business in the said area. His brother ex-MPA Shakir Ali was elected from PS-96 constituency, Burns Road in 2002.Following the incident, tension prevailed in different parts of the city where routine and commercial activities were partially suspended while law enforcers were put on high alert to avoid any untoward incident. The incident also forced traders and shopkeepers across the City to announce complete shutterdown strike on Wednesday (today) in protest against the extortion, kidnapping for ransom and a killing of traders.Following the incident, traders and shopkeepers of the market also closed their shops and staged a protest against the incident and shouted slogans against the government, police, rangers and Lyari gangsters.Sher Shah Market association’s president Muhammad Zahid strongly condemned the incident and said that the government and law enforcers seems reluctant to protect the lives of citizens.Following the incident, Jehanabad police post in-charge and six other policemen were also suspended as they did not respond at the time of the incident while a department inquiry was also being initiated against them.West Zone SSP Amir Farooqui said that it was an act of target killing as police did not get any evidence about extortion. He said that there was an issue of extortion in the market but this incident had no link with it while the raids would be continued to arrest the culprits. Later he was buried in Shah Muhammad graveyard, North Karachi.It is pertinent to mention here that a similar incident was occurred when armed men on various motorcycles arrived and opened indiscriminate firing at the traders and shopkeepers at the market. At least 14 traders and shopkeepers lost their lives in brazen attacks in presence of the law enforcers including Rangers and police in October 2010.This news was published in The Nation newspaper.
