KARACHI - Striker Shakeel Abbasi has been named captain of the 18-member Pakistan team for the four-nation Hamburg Masters Hockey which will be played in the German city from October 3, President PHF Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali announced here Friday after watching one-day trials held here at the HCP. The 18-member team was picked after two sessions of trials in which 35 players appeared. The team: Goalkeepers: Nasir Ahmed, Imran Shah. Fullbacks: Kashif Ali, Muhammad Atif, Muhammad Imran. Halfbacks: Muhammad Irfan, Zaheer Ahmed, Rana Asif, Kamran Shahzad, Fareed Ahmed. Forwards: Waqas Shariff, Shakeel Abbasi (captain), Haseem Khan, Shafqat Rasool, Akhtar Ali, Muhammad Taufiq, Inayatullah, Muhammad Zubair. Fullback Muhammad Imran who is in South Korea with Pakistan Army team did not appear in the trials but was picked in the team. He has been named vice captain of the team, which will leave here for Hamburg on September 30. Host Germany, the Beijing gold medallist, Malaysia and Belgium are other teams in the championship which is the first international men's competition after Beijing Olympics. Jamali, PHF secretary Asif Bajwa and manager-cum-chief-coach of the team Jahangir Butt formed the selection panel.
