KARACHI – Finally on the 11th day, All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association – an alliance of goods transporters associations - announced to end their strike after negotiations with the government.Talks between the two-member committee of the government and All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association on late Thursday night met and after consensus to resolve the truckers’ problems, the protestors end their strike. The committee, which was formed by Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to resolve the crisis that brought economic activities to a halt, included Ports and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri, Abbas Afridi, high-ups of the police department, Motorway Police and officials of Karachi Port Trust.The minister assured that government will withdraw all cases against the transporters and police check post will be formed for the protection of goods carriers. The committee announced to establish check-posts at Northern Bypass and providing security on the highway. It also said that illegal toll plazas will be removed. It was agreed that for three months, truck carrying more than the desired load will not be fined.Moreover, containers will not be lifted for using them as barricades in the City. Instead, the KPT will provide Rs20 million to Sindh Police to buy these containers. During the meeting, the minister walked out of the room on argument between the two groups at the table. He later came back and proceeded with the dialogue.Earlier, it was suggested that a committee be formed comprising representatives of interior ministry and transporters, which was rejected by the latter. They said that they wanted swift resolution of the issue.
