SBC splits in two groups

KARACHI - A rift has been occurred among Sindh Bar Council when it splits into two rival groups. The present Advocate General Sindh and Chairman of SBC, Yousuf Laghari, has taken the initiative to call Councils' meeting for its election today (Sunday) while the presently elected members termed the measure as illegal and to sabotage the lawyers struggle. It is to be noted that the election of SBCs held on January 30, 2009 for the tenure of the ongoing year in which Mehmood-ul-Hassan has been elected as vice chairman of the body. Situation became worse when another group alleged it illegal and decided to take part in that meeting which is being held by the Chairman Yousuf Laghari and further more he also boycotted the meeting. Mehmood-ul-Hassan reminded that a majority of the bar cast their respective votes to choose the office bearers and considered this activity against norms of law. He doubted that this hostile action clearly reflects the aim to sabotage the objectives of the lawyers movement. He forcefully condemned those participants whore are playing nefarious role in this activity. "The government seems to be involved in creating a serious tussle between lawyers community but he firmly assured that any such situation would not be allowed to take place for the fulfilment of unlawful designs." Hassan said that the SBC chairman keeps no power to alter the schedule once it amended in the constitution while it requires 50 per cent participation of the members of the committee. He once again reaffirmed that respective members has elected me as vice chairman and the concerning meeting would be termed as illegal. On the other side, the senior SBC members Salahuddin Gandapur and Sathi Ishaque, who did not take part in the previous SBC's meeting, have claimed that majority of the council's members are with them and today's SBC meeting will prove their claim. They also said that only chairman of SBC was authorised to call its meeting, despite postponing the previous meeting by the chairman. It must be mentioned here that the SBC election of the year 2009 had been held on January 30 followed by its meeting, in which its vice chairmen, chairmen of its eighteen subcommittees had also been elected. In which the Chairman Yousuf Laghri did not participated as he had announced to hold the meeting on February 15. There were 27 members out of 42 participated in the said meeting. Two members including Abrar Hassan and Shakur Abbasi walked out and declared the meeting as illegal. Though, another member Faheem Riaz Siddiqui Advocate also walked out from the meeting because of unnecessary delay by Vice Chairman Laghari. However, participants of the meeting finally announced Mehmood-ul-Hassan as SBC Vice Chairman.
