Sharmila seeks medical board for jail inmates

KARACHI - Adviser to chief minister Sindh, Sharmila Farooqui, on Tuesday visited Karachi Central Jail and reviewed the facilities being provided to prisoners. She also met the prisoners and enquired about their problems and also issued directives on the spot. She noted their serious health problems and legal problems. She expressed deep concern over the lack of health facilities in the prison hospital and recommended to the Sindh CM for the establishment of an independent medical board under the supervision of reputed doctors like SUITs director Dr Adeeb-ul-Hasan Rizvi. She stressed of providing best medical treatment to the prisoners all across the 20 prisons of the province, as hundreds of prisoners are patients of chronic diseases. During her visit to the prison hospital, the prisoners informed her about the deficiency of doctors, medicines and other facilities. She observed that the establishment of an independent medical board under the monitoring of provincial health secretary is need of the hour. Furthermore, appointment of specialist doctors including psychiatrist, ENT specialist, heart specialist, skin specialists, liver specialist is essential for providing standard health facilities to the patient prisoners as many of them are suffering from chronic diseases. A kidney patient prisoner told the advisor that he is roaming with catheter in his urinary bladder for the last two and a half years, but the SUIT doctors did not admit him due to one or other reasons. She, on the spot, contacted the SUITs Dr Naqi Zafar and informed him about the condition of the prisoner. Dr Naqvi told her that he did not know the details of the case of the said prisoner patient that why his case is being delayed, but the hospital administration would operate him the next day as per his availability. Sharmila directed the jail administration to make arrangements for sending the kidney patient to SUIT for operation. The adviser to Sindh Chief Minister was remained present in the Jail for several hours and visited jails kitchen, various barracks, cells of the prisoners, jail hospital and even visited the Phansi Ghatt (gallop) prisoners. She also visited the cell of the political prisoners and asked about their problems. During her visit to the jail kitchen, jail authorities informed her about the menu and food items for the prisoners. Later talking to the media, Sharmila said that she had recommended for the establishment of an independent medical board under the supervision of reputed doctors like Dr Adeeb-ul-Hasan Rizvi, which would recommend the procedure of the treatment to the serious patients in all the 20 jails of the province, she said.
