KARACHI - Despite the dynamic leadership of Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, the Karachi University (KU) is undergoing the mismanagement and negligence at the hands of its administration as several high-ranking officials are not performing their duties in a positive and due manner. Several issues, including administrative re-structuring, examination system, security matters and quality enhancement are not being dealt with required managerial skills and sincerity.     The main reason for the failure of the management in term of dealing with administrative affairs is the appointment of retired officials, including Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Akhlaq Ahmed, Registrar Prof Rais Alvi, Director Finance S M Khalid, Secretary Vice Chancellor Shamssul Haq, Chief Accountant Muhammad Iqbal, Auditor Ashfaq Ahmed and Controller of Examinations Prof Maqsood Hussain, at the key positions. However, the official activities of the KU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Akhlaq Ahmed have incessantly been under criticism. Some senior professors said, on condition of anonymity, have continuously termed his appointment useless for the position of the PVC ships. They are of the view that Pro-VC was appointed by the Governor Sindh for some vital assignments, including administrative re-structuring, affairs of examination system, security matters and quality enhancement.  He was also directed to look after matters relating to appointments, postings and transfers. A senior KU official, on condition of the anonymity, said that due to the inefficiency of the Pro-VC, the KU security personnel were on the edge of the protest against administration on demands of arrears and new uniforms. "Due to the intervention of the KU chief and campus security officer, Dr Khalid Iraqi, the issue was resolved, as the administration provided them uniforms worth Rs 14 million. The KU is suffering a lot of administrative problems in this connection, but the VC seems helpless to remove inefficient people. On the other hand, the Pro-VC is also responsible to handle examination department that has failed to announce degree results in time. Secretary to VC, Shamssul Haq, is another official termed inefficient to perform his duties. He usually keeps important files pending just to show his power.
