89 PSs sanctuary for mobile snatchers

KARACHI - Out of 104 police stations in the metropolis, as many as 89 have been declared safe havens for mobile phone snatchers and thieves, well-informed sources revealed to The Nation on Wednesday. They told that police data regarding incidents of mobile phone snatching revealed that criminals were more active the areas falling in the limits of 89 police stations in the city. A CPLC report stated that about 1,26,129 cell phones had either been snatched or stolen in Karachi from 1st September 2007 to 31 August 2008. According to the CPLC report, the police stations (PS) in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Korangi, Preedy, Ferozabad, Gulistan-e-Johar, Nazimabad, New Karachi, SITE, Kharadar and Defence are ideal places for mobile phone snatchers, who roamed in these areas on motorcycles and target citizens at gunpoint. It further stated that during September 1 to August 31, 2,650 mobile phones were snatched from Gulshan-e-Iqbal, 2,472 from Korangi, 2,225 Preedy, 1,801 Ferozabad, 1,661 from Gulistan-e-Johar, 1,633 Nazimabad, 1,389 from New Karachi, 1,358 from SITE and 1,346 from Defence. The report also mentioned that 61,340 cell phones were either stolen or snatched all over the country during this period.
