KARACHI - The committee for female and juvenile prisoners has said that the pending cases of juvenile would be resolved soon. The committee also approved two cases of air tickets of foreign female prisoners whose sentence have been expired but due to non-availability of money they cant go to their country. The committee for female and juvenile prisoners took these decision in a meeting held at the office of women development department of Sindh government, informed sources told The Nation on Saturday. Secretary Women Development Department Rabiya Javeri Agha presided over the meeting, while chief CPLC Sharfuddin Memon, deputy secretary social welfare department Muhammad Riaz Gill, Anila Ansari, representative of committee for welfare of women prisoners, and some other also participated in the meeting. They discussed the issues and problems of women and juvenile prisoners in detail. The committee was informed that during the current financial year 2009-10, the finance department of Sindh government has allocated a sum of Rs10 million for the purpose of fine bail security of those female and juvenile prisoners who are financially not able in the position to pay the bail surety due to which they are still facing the jail term despite ending of their imprisonment. It was further informed that a sum of Rs81,75,000 was paid to the office of IG Prison Sindh from 2006-07 to 2008-09, out of which a sum of Rs18,72,570 had been spent so far for the payment of fine of 44 female and a juvenile prisoners as per the decision by the committee. The committee also discussed 18 cases of juvenile prisoners of bail surety which were deferred due to involvement in double cases of serious nature or non-availability and production of brief history of their cases. It also decided that finance department would also be requested to release the withheld amount of Rs10 million already allocated for the current financial year 2009-10 for the purpose immediately. Regarding an Afghan national female who was detained in the jails of Sindh, Anila of CWWP has been assigned the job of preparation of such detained prisoners lists and submit the report to the committee, so that the efforts through authorities concerned would be made for their repatriation. The IG Prisons office is again advised to submit details of cases as per performa and population of women and juvenile in at least one week time. The chairperson of the meeting expressed her concern over the absence of some of the members of the committee including the representatives of AG Sindh, Panah, LHRLA and Edhi home for women. It was unanimously agreed that since Panah and LHRLA had never attended the above meetings since their inception. They would be officially informed and later replaced with new NGOs like Aanghan, APWA, Hope and others.
