KARACHI – Karachi Water and Sewerage Board managing director has expressed fear that industrial waste is being disposed of in Kenjhar Lake which is a major source of drinking water for Karachiites. He stated this during a visit to Chalia and Kotri on emergency basis after publication of report in the media that industrial waste is being disposed of in Kenjhar Lake. DMD Ali Palejo, Chief Engineer Bulk, Superintendent Engineer, officers concerned and journalists were also present on the occasion. KW&SB MD spoke to the Hyderabad commissioner who had assured him that the industrial waste is not being disposed of in the lake anymore and it has been stopped. However, during the visit it was observed that the waste water is still being disposed of in the lake. The KW&SB MD informed the Sindh governor and Sindh chief secretary regarding the situation on the phone from the site. He expressed distress over the ignorance of departments concerned on this important issue which can put millions of lives in danger. He said that despite many reminders during past 10 years Departments of Irrigation, Environment and Industries have failed to take necessary actions in order to stop the waste water of Kotri Industrial Area to reach water supply to Karachi. This is a severe threat to more than 20 million citizens of Karachi. He said that immediate actions must be taken to stop the waste water to reach the KB Feeder. It is a vital necessity for the citizens of Karachi since 70 per cent of the water supplied to Karachi comes from Kenjhar Lake. In this regard, he informed Secretary Irrigation, Secretary Environment, Secretary Industries and Commissioner Hyderabad about this very serious issue through a letter on Tuesday. He requested that immediate actions must be taken to resolve the issue, short-term and long-term policies must be formulated since the waste poses a threat not only to human life but to the marine life as well.Eight months ago similar requests to Secretary Irrigation and Secretary Environment were made, requesting to take measures to stop industrial waste from Nooriabad and Kotri to reach Kenjhar Lake. However, despite many reminders over the years no action has been taken yet.The KW&SB MD has directed the Chief Engineer Bulk and Chief Chemist to collect samples from Kenjhar Lake to inspect and ensure that citizens of Karachi are supplied with clean and healthy drinking water.
