KARACHI - Two bandits were killed in separate shootouts, while an alleged assassin was arrested in the metropolis on Saturday.
In North Nazimabad, a bandit succumbed to his gunshot wounds half an hour after police got information he was ferried to the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment, following a shootout.
The bandits, except the one who died, remain unidentified so far. They came on two bikes and a car and were tried to be flagged down in Block-J. A shootout broke out between them and a police party, led by SHO Raja Tariq, during a chase.
The bandits opened fire and the attack was retaliated. As a result, one of the bandits fell down being hit by a bullet.
His associates, however, took him away, leaving his bike behind that was said to be stolen from the Surjani Police Station in July 2012.
According to police officers, the wounded criminal was brought from Sakhi Hassan area, where the group of bandits fled. They further said after his death during the treatment, his body was taken away without the completion of any legal formalities.
Having identified him as Rashid, son of Abdul Qayum, the police rushed to his area, Qasba Colony, but could not get information about him. A case has been registered against other five unidentified bandits.
In another shootout, an alleged robber was killed near Millennium Mall within the remits of the Sharah-e-Faisal Police Station. His accomplice, however, managed to flee.
Police officials said that two robbers were busy robbing passers-by in the locality. A police party just reached the spot when the bandits opened fire at it. In retaliation, one the of bandits, yet to be identified, was killed. His accomplice fled, however. A case has been registered against them on the compliant of one of their victims, namely Parvez. Two cellphones and a pistol were recovered from the dead robber.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Violent Crime Cell claimed to have arrested an alleged slayer in a raid on Pak Colony.
The suspect was identified as Iqbal alias Mandela. His arrest was disclosed to the media at the AVCC office in Garden Police Headquarters during a briefing.
DSP Mumtaz Magsi said that the arrest was made on a tip-off, adding that the accused, during the initial course of interrogation, confessed to have involvement in over 30 cases of targeted killings and 20 cases of extortion. A kalashnikov, a repeater and a TT pistol were seized from him.
