Negligence killed nine  neonates, reveals inquiry

KARACHI - The administration of Korangi’s Shah Neonatal Children Hospital has been declared responsible for the death of nine newborns due to inadequate facilities at the hospital in Karachi, an inquiry report reveals.
According to the inquiry committee formed by the Sindh CM under the supervision of City commissioner, the administration of the hospital and it’s co-owner Dr Adnan Bashir were responsible for the incident in which nine newborns die, while seven of them died only in an hour.
The infants died primarily because the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital ran out of oxygen after a power breakdown, the committee comprised on Additional Secretary Health Imran Atta Somroo, Additional Secretary Technical Dr Aslam Pechoho and Secretary Blood Transfusion Authority Dr Zahid Ansari found out.
The report says Dr Adnan is also an employee of Sindh Health Department and deployed in the evening shift at Sindh Govenrment Children Hospital, North Nazimabad. The report recommended the authorities concerned to terminate Dr Adnan and also file a murder case against him. It was also recommended that all deputy commissioners must check the degrees of doctors and other staff working in public and private hospitals.
The report also asked the provincial government to immediately implement the Sindh Health Commission Bill in the province.
