Court remands Atif Polani to FIA custody

KARACHI - The District and Session Judge (South) on Saturday was remanded Atif Polani, one of the directors of Khanani and Kalia Money Exchange Company and main accused in countrys biggest foreign exchange scam, to the custody of FIA till May 25 by Judicial Magistrate South, Fazal Boyo here on Saturday. Polani was also operating a company of Alberoni Exchange along with Khanani and Kalia The FIA officials produced the accused before the court of Judge Faheem Ahmed Siddiqui, where the investigation officer (IO) of the case requested to grant them his remand for further investigation. The accused was arrested from Dubai and brought to Karachi to face charges against him. At least three cases are pending against him. He was allegedly involved in a huge foreign exchange flight from Pakistan that drove Pakistan to the brink of financial bankruptcy. Meanwhile, District and Sessions Judge, South, Faheem Ahmed Siddiqui dismissed an application moved by the accused seeking return of computers and other articles seized by the FIA raiding parties. The applicant maintained that the computers and articles were used in lawful money transfers and thus be returned to the company. The judge dismissing the application held that the items in question are case property and could not be returned at this stage. On the other side, Additional District Judge (East) reserved the judgement in the case of possessing explosive material from Muhajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) Chairman Afaq Ahmed till May 26. The MQM (Haqiqi) chief was charged under Section 12-E R/W for possessing explosive items. The court has reserved the verdict after hearing the comments from both the sides and also heard the witnesses and examined the evidences regarding the case. Meanwhile, Additional District Judge (South) Nizar Ali Khawaja adjourned the hearing of the bail plea moved by the accused of rape case till May 21. The counsel on behalf of the applicant Shoban, who was allegedly involved in the case of rape with Kainat Soomro, has submitted his comments before the court over the bail plea. It is to be noted here that the prosecution has submitted that the accused along with his other accomplices committed gang rape with Kainat Soomro within the jurisdiction of Meher police station, district Dadu, on Jan 19, 2007. The police registered an FIR No 22/2007 against the accused. DPO ordered to investigate against CIA Inspector A division bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) comprising Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha on Saturday ordered District Police Officer (DPO) Tando Allahyar to investigate against Sub Inspector Shamsuddin Khokhar while hearing a complaint by an elderly woman. The bench earlier heard Mst Sharifan, appearing in person who alleged that respondent police officer took away his four sons. Later two of them were booked in false and foisted cases, one was released while fourth is still missing. She alleged that police officer also took away 0.55million in cash besides other valuables from her house.
