KARACHI - PML-N senior Vice President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has urged the PPP-led ruling coalition to respect Punjab's mandate and avoid creating problems for the PML-N government. He was addressing the press conference on Tuesday before the Iftar party hosted by PML-N Sindh leader Syed Hafeez-ud-Din at his house in honour of Javed Hashmi. PML-N leader Mamnoon Hussain, Makhdoom Shahnawaz and Acting President PML-N Sindh Salim Zia were also present. He asked President Asif Ali Zardari to announce transfer of presidential powers to the parliament when he addresses the joint session of the Parliament. He requested the President to repeal 17th Constitutional amendment and surrender presidential powers under article 58-2(b) of the Constitution. He said that Zardari was hundred times better than former president Musharraf but nation wants him to honour the commitments of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto about democracy. "If you (Zardari) don't do it, then PML-N would table resolution in the parliament to seek abrogation of the 17th amendment," he said. Hashmi called American policy impracticable and urged Americans to stand against the Bush regime. "Should you not oust the Bush regime, it may cost you dearly. United States suffer colossal and irreparable losses due the warring policies of the US administration," he said. Answering a question, he said PML-N had been an ally of the PPP in the ruling coalition but both parties had their own agenda and differ from each others on the foreign and economic policies. He said that PML-N government had not allowed WAPDA to raise the electricity tariff in PML-N's 1997-99 tenure despite the fact that Pakistan had a meagre amount in exchequer. "PML-N would have cleared the dues of the power plants and shouldn't have allowed the loadshedding in the country." "Had PML-N been in the power, it wouldn't have bowed the US administration's pressure and would have established relations with the US without compromising on Pakistan's national interest," he said. To a question, he said, PPP-led government shouldn't keep nation waiting for the next government to prevent the US-led forces' attacks. "Government must make it clear that the ISAF and Nato forces could be denied the facilities they are enjoying now if they attack into Pakistani territories," he said. Hashmi urged the PPP-led government not to disappoint the people. He said people want fruits of democracy. "Unfortunately, common people see no change in the economic policies and they are still victims of price-hike, poverty and unemployment," he said. He said that people want smooth functioning of democracy through its evolutionary process but they also want government to act upon the charter of democracy.
