700 political victims’ heirs to get compensation

KARACHI - A commission led by Justice (r) Zahid Qurban Alvi has sorted out names of at least 700 victims to give financial compensation to their legal heirs.Talking to media persons at his office on Tuesday, he said the commission had compiled a list of 700 victims, mainly belonging to the activists of the Pakistan People’s Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Awami National Party, Jafferia Alliance and other parties, who have been declared genuine cases of targeted killings.Among the political workers include 170 slain workers belonged to PPP, 150 to MQM, more than 100 to Jafferia Alliance, 99 to the ANP, 28 to the Sunni Tehreek, four to the MQM-Haqiqi, 11 to the Awami Tehreek and 31 to the Katchhi Rabita Committee, who were killed on the political grounds.He told that the Rs0.2million will be given to each bereaved family.He said that political parties had provided the list of victimised families last year. He said after verifying the record of victims, compensation would be given. He said that this year, political parties took the responsibility to suggest the names of the victims to compensate them in transparent manner.He said besides these 700 families, the families of other victims who lost their life in violence of 2012 would also be compensated; however, the verification in this regard was still in process.He said that beyond the compensation, the commission was trying to provide other benefits like education and vocational training to the children of the victims.It may be noted the Sindh government following the court orders formed a commission comprising of Justice (r) Zahid Qurban Alvi and additional secretary of the Home Department to process the cases of people killed on pretext of targeted killings, so that financial compensation could be distributed their legal heirs.TWO COPS SHOT DEAD: A police constable Aurangzaib was shot dead in Orangi Town within the limits of Pirabad police station. According to SHO Ashfaq Baloch, the deceased was posted to the Orangi Town SP office and the incident occurred when he was on way to home after completing his duty. He said the deceased saw two men throwing ball bombs near a public park. He tried to catch them on which culprits shot him dead and later managed to escape. Some militants threw the bombs which exploded with a loud bang but fortunately no loss of life was reported.In another incident, a policeman Mithal, 37, was gunned down in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. SHO Asif Rauf said that deceased policeman was posted to the private bank where at least two armed men shot him dead when he was trying to stop the bandits entering the bank. The officer said that the culprits wanted to rob the bank but they failed due to the deceased policeman. His body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy. Meanwhile, an alleged robber was killed by the firing of crowd in Rehri Goth area of Sukkan police limits. Police officials said that at least three robbers were trying to loot the milk shop in the area where locals managed to catch one of them and killed him while rest managed to escape.
