KARACHI - Law enforcement agencies have so far been unable to make any headway in the kidnapping case of two United Nations workers.
Police have yet to register a case of the incident due to the conventional dispute between Sohrab Goth and Gulshan-e-Mymar police stations regarding the jurisdiction.
Two workers of the United Nations went missing under mysterious circumstances from the outskirts of the city. Farrukh and Sami who had come from Hyderabad went missing since they reached a resort in the city. The police officials concerned are unable to ascertain the whether the employees were associated with the UNICEF or UNHCR.
SSP Irfan Baloch said they have recovered car of the missing employees, but could not trace their whereabouts.
When contacted, DSP Qamar Ahmed said nobody approached them to get the FIR registered.
It is worth mentioning here that the area where the incident occurred is considered to be a stronghold of Taliban militants who are involved in various cases of kidnapping for ransom including renowned film-maker Sataish Anand and a Nato oil supplier Shaukat Afridi. On the other side, it has also been reported that such activities took place during dialogue process in order to mount pressure on the government for the release of TTP captives. The terrorists involved in such cases are usually shifting the victims to Waziristan or Baluchistan, placing their demands from the no-go areas of Waziristan and Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, police claimed to have killed two bandits in two separate alleged encounters. A robber was killed and his companion was wounded in an alleged encounter with police in Rozi Goth locality within the limits of Surjani Police Station. Police officials claimed that two suspects were looting the citizens in the area when the encounter took place. They also claimed that police constable Maqsood was also wounded in the exchange of fire with the criminals. In another incident, some unidentified assailants opened indiscriminate fire on a couple and their son in Surjani Town police remits. Afsar Khan, his wife, and their young son, Waqas, were going somewhere on a motorcycle when the attackers opened fire at them.
Police said that Zeeshan, who is the family member of the victim couple, has some monetary dispute with someone, which was the main cause of the attack. The injured couple and their son were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medical treatment.
