Bomb hoax at KU creates panic

KARACHI - A bomb hoax created panic at the Karachi University (KU) on Tuesday and forced the students and KU employees to evacuate their departments. As the news of bomb present at KU aired on different channels, parents forced their children to stay home. The KU Campus Officer Dr Khalid Iraqi told The Nation that he was informed by the SHO of Mobina Town, Imran Jakhrani, about the rumour of bomb at the KU by a phone call. Dr Iraqi said, "The SHO informed me that a terrorist, arrested in Gujrat, during an interrogation informed police that a bomb had been fixed at Karachi University, however he did not mentioned the place where the bomb was fixed. After gaining the information the Punjab Police informed Karachi police headquarter to take further action. As per the information, laboratory-based departments and institutions of the varsity are the main targets of the expected bomb blast." Following the information of bomb, personnel of law-enforcement agencies and bomb disposal squad along with DSP Gulshan Iqbal Rizwan and SHO of Mobina Town had reached the scene and inspected several departments and laboratory-based institutions. The officials of the agencies focused mainly on KU Administration Block, examination department, central library, arts lobby, chemistry department, HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research, Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Science Information Centre and Third World Centre. After inspection at the KU, the agencies' personnel declared it a bomb hoax.
