3 power pylons blown up in Balochistan

QUETTA - Three power pylons of main transmission line were blown up between Quetta and Sibi area on late Thursday night worsening the power crisis in Balochistan. According to official sour-ces, unknown people had planted explosive material with main electricity transmission lines of 220 KV and 130 KV, which went off with a powerful explosion, damaging three towers completely and leaving another one partially damaged. The supply of electricity to many areas of the province was suspended due to destruction of the towers. However, power supply to many areas was later restored through alternative means, the sources added. Meanwhile, addressing a hurriedly called Press conference Chief Executive of Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) Shafiq Khattak said that unidentified people had blown up three towers of main transmission line of 220KV and 130KV supplying electricity to different areas of Balochistan from Guddu. He said that after destruction of power pylons Balochistan faces shortage of 401MW power. 'Balochistan was already facing shortage of 400 MW and after the act of sabotage province is facing now a shortage of 800 MW, he added. He said that around 27 districts of Balochistan including Quetta, Mastung, Nahal, Nushki, Kalat, Khuzdar, Pishin, Chaman, Qila Abdullah and other areas were badly affected due to suspension of power supply. QESCO Chief said that according to new schedule of QESCO eight hours of loadshedding would be carried out in Quetta, 16 hours in district headquarters while in rural areas of affected districts would face 20 hours loadshedding. He, however, said engineers and equipment for the repair of damaged towers would arrive from Karachi and Lahore and personnel of WADPA would start work to restore power supply from affected tower after security clearance. He said that without getting complete security it would not be possible for them to begin repair work because in past many workers of WADPA had been killed due to explosion of landmines. Khattak said that all out efforts were on to restore power supply to the affected districts from Guddu, however, repair work could take a week. He said that this incident had inflicted a loss of Rs 6 million to QESCO while it was paying Rs 1.1 million to the government for the security of electricity tower every month.
