Rangers given special powers in Karachi

Rangers in Karachi have again been awarded with the powers of police under which theyll be entitled to conduct raids, detain and interrogate suspects at their own, said a notification issued by the Sindh government here Thursday. Rangers enjoyed these powers for months when these were conferred upon them early this year. However, Sindh government withdrew these last month without citing a reason. The notification was issued following a meeting of law enforcement officials held with Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, provincial interior minister, in chair. Meeting was held to review law and order situation of the city in the wake of recent spree of target killing, which has so far claimed 23 lives in two-day-long violence in the city. DIGs of different zones of Karachi presented their reports before the meeting attended by IG Police, CCPO, DG Rangers, provincial secretary for interior and other high-ups. The meeting was informed that 291 people have so far been arrested in the city in last two days.
