Karachi - Government of Sindh directed police to protect eloped couples. Source privy to the matter told that Government, ahead of the Karokari and Jirga Systems, wrote a letter to the Provincial Police Officer Slahuddin Babar Khattack in which government urged the police to provide protection to the couples to be married on their will and also take action against the Jirga system. It has also been directed in the letter that in light of the decision of SHC, decision taken by the Jirgas is unlawful and unconstitutional. The letter stated that it was the responsibility of the police to discourage Jirga system and protect the people who fell a victim to the so-called decisions of Jirga. The letter further revealed that police officers of the concerned areas would be responsible, if any misconduct related to the Karokari took place in their jurisdictions. It is pertinent to mentioned that the United Nations had also been taken the notice of Karokari and directed to the government of Pakistan to send the detail reports of the incidents took place here in Pakistan last year.
