5 hurt in cracker attack at hotel


KARACHI – Five people were wounded in a cracker attack at Maripur Road within the jurisdiction of Kalri police station.
According to details, unidentified motorcyclists managed to escape after throwing a cracker at Dua Hotel.
Four workers of the hotel and a watchman including Maroof, Saeed, Jawaid, Murad and Najeeb were wounded in the attack, who were later shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi for medical treatment. Police and Bomb Disposal Squad rushed to the spot after being informed. The BDS officials said that the bomb was carrying 100 gram explosive. Police quoted the owner of hotel namely Haji Ismail Niyazi as saying that he did not receive any threat or slip from the extortionist.
The motive behind the incident has yet to be ascertained till the filing of this report. Further investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, a man was gunned down in Lines Area within the jurisdictions of Preedy police station.
Police said that the victim identified as Ashiq Abbas, 55, son of Qasim Ali, resident of same area, was going to his workplace on a rickshaw when unidentified assailants riding a motorbike intercepted him and sprayed bullets.
He sustained multiple bullet injuries and shifted him to Civil Hospital Karachi, where he succumbed to injuries during medical treatment. Police said that the victim was an employee in a private bank. The motive behind the killing has yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, Sindh Inspector General of Police Fayyaz Ahmed Laghari has ordered foolproof security arrangements for health workers and volunteers engaged in door-to-door immunization campaign against polio in Karachi.
Taking notice of firing on polio vaccinators the provincial police chief ordered stringent action against those harassing Oral Polio Vaccinators (OPV) teams or attempting to assault them.
Fayyaz Laghari ordered that culprits responsible for attacks on workers in different areas of Karachi on Monday evening and Tuesday morning must be arrested through proper intelligence sharing.
He also ordered Superintendent Police of Karachi to ensure constant contact and regular coordination with polio vaccinators’ teams working in their respective jurisdictions.
He said SP’s were responsible for the security of workers engaged in OPV campaign and therefore must develop foolproof mechanism for their protection.
Moreover, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah while taking serious notice of attacks on anti polio campaign workers, has strongly condemned the attacks in which four women workers have been killed here. He directed the additional IG Police Karachi to submit the report about this heinous and cowardice incident, within 24 hours and culprits be arrested at the earliest.
The CM Sindh directed the Health Department officials to provide best possible treatment to the injured persons.
He also condoled with the families of the deceased women workers and prayed for the departed souls and early recovery of injured persons.
While expressing his firm resolve to continue the anti polio campaign, the chief minister said that no miscreant would be allowed to sabotage the anti polio campaign aimed to eradicate the crippling disease from our society, he added.
