Limited police strength not sufficient for security

KARACHI - Security officials have failed to counter terrorism pertaining to upcoming processions in Rabi-ul-Awal. A security official on the condition of confidentiality told The Nation that limited police strength was not sufficient to provide the security to all major and minor processions. He pointed out that agencies had warned about the possible threat of terrorism on the occasion of Rabi-ul-Awal; whereas law enforcement agencies have already failed to the probe the recent acts of terrorism. Terrorists used new method on Chehlum Day and achieved their goals without targeting the main procession. Investigators of the alleged four arrested terrorists of Junduallah believed that terrorist will definitely target the processions of Rabi-ul-Awal as insufficient police force is unable to track down the network of the said extremists. A large number of processions would be take out on the road from various areas and how it is possible to monitor each of them. He cited the statistical population of Orangi Town, where around 1 million people are being controlled by just three police stations. As many as 5000 suspects having affiliation with various religious outfits are still under surveillance of different agencies but we are unable to arrest them without any charge, he added. He further told that thousands of others, especially those who have settled in the city under the cover of the IDPs and it is difficult for law enforcement agencies to detect their whereabouts. Source added that police high ups have directed to all concerned DIGs, TPOs, and SHOs to make foolproof security arrangements for the processions and rallies. It is pertinent to mentioned here that terrorists remain at large and have targeted all main processions taken place in the city during first two months of Islamic year including Muharram and Safar. The procession of 12th Rabi-ul-Awal would be held on main Jinnah Road whereas hundreds of small processions from across the city will join the main procession that would culminate at Nishter Park. Police source said that it would be difficult for law enforcement agencies to check and provide security to all minor processions.
