Sherry orders inquiry, rejects chairman's stance

KARACHI - Rejecting the PTV chairman's inquiry as illegal, Federal Information Minister Sherry Rehman has ordered another inquiry into the negligence of the PTV officials during the live telecast of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's first address to the nation. Informed sources revealed to The Nation that the newly appointed chairman of the PTV, Dr Shahid Masood, himself was somehow responsible for the negligence and his favourites blamed another official in the inquiry to punish him to save themselves from accountability. Sources in the Information Ministry added that when the information minister visited the PTV centre at 4pm to see the arrangements for the PM's speech, the chairman PTV was having rest in his office pretending to have suffered from rumbling in his stomach so as to avoid receiving his immediate boss, Sherry Rehman. They said that as soon as the minister left PTV for PM House, Masood arrived on the scene looking sleepy and nonchalant. He gossiped with the Union people and directed them to chant slogans in his favour when the PM will arrive at PTV. Sources in information ministry said the employees started gathering at PTV centre brought by the Union. The Union leaders told the authorities that only three of them will present a bouquet of flowers to the PM and no one will come near the prime minister. Gilani arrived at the PTV centre at 10.30pm. They revealed to The Nation that the members of the Union started chanting slogans as soon as the PM entered the main entrance. Union members started slogans in favour of PTV chairman. The number of slogans in favour of the chairman were far more than the PM. They added that just a few days ago the Union had been given a package of over Rs 70 crore against the advice of the Director Finance in the CBA charter negotiation team. This amount seems to be the result of slogans in favour of the chairman. After the mishap occurred during Prime Minister address the Chairman/Managing Director Pakistan Television Corporation ordered to hold the inquiry on July 20.  The inquiry team constituted by the chairman comprised members who themselves (director news and current affairs, controller IT, director engineering) were responsible for smooth broadcast of the PM's speech sources added. They said that Director News and Current Affairs Sarwar Munir Rao was missing from the scene whereas he should have been organising the loading of the speech on the teleprompter and making sure that the pages were not mixed. But pages were not loaded in the correct order. It is ironical that the people responsible for this mishap were made members of the inquiry committee including Director News and Current Affairs Sarwar Munir Rao, the main person responsible behind the incident. The initial inquiry report was presented to the chairman PTV on July 21 at 2am. The deputy managing director and few other people were held responsible for the interruption and alleged fault occurred in teleprompter. Interestingly, the suspension orders of Shahid Nadeem were released to private TV channels on July 21 at 1:30am. According to law, the chairman PTV cannot suspend the deputy managing director but can constitute committee to hold inquiry of the case in point. The chairman is supposed to present inquiry report to the minister for information & broadcasting for further action. In turn, the minister will advise the PM to take action as per her report
