Rangers DG for cancellation of arms’ licences

KARACHI - Expressing determination to control terrorism, Rangers Director General Major General Bilal Akbar has said that foreign powers are behind the subversive activities in the city and its evidences have been sent to Interior Ministry.   
He was briefing the Senate standing committee for human rights over the law and order situation of Karachi.
The meeting presided over by Senator Nasreen Jalil was held at the Sindh Secretariat here on Thursday. Senators Sitara Ayaz, Sehar Kamran, Farhatullah Baber, Samia Waheed, Jahanzaib Jamaluddin, IG Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali, DG Rangers, provincial home secretary attended the meeting. However, Senate committee members Atizaz Ahsan and Baber Awan were not present on the occasion.
Rangers DG Major General Bilal Akbar said the city were witnessing two kinds of terrorism in which the first terrorist group was targeting the LEAs personnel and the other had kept the scholars and professionals on their target.
Around 70 per cent of the crimes in the city erupt out of personal disputes and clashes, he said. At least 13 per cent of targeted killings are based on sectarian ground whereas 17 per cent activities of street crimes have been affecting the peace of the city. The DG Rangers said the LEAs were carrying out operation in the city and working hard to counter the crime rate.
He said a terrorist involved in Safoora carnage was arrested earlier but was freed by the court. “We will probe the matter how he got bail,” he added. He further said about 4,500 seminaries exist in Karachi out of which 3 to 5 per cent were imparting terrorism training to their students. Moreover, children reported missing from seminaries being used for terrorism act, he added.
He said that Karachi targeted operation was not against any specific party and LEAs were taking indiscriminate action against the banned outfits, Lyari gang war and criminals present in the political parties.
LEAs taking all measures to wipe out the illegal arms from Karachi, he said responding to a query of Senate standing committee. All stakeholders should have to come up with a joint policy regarding the issue. Verification of arm licences is required and it would be better if the government cancel all such licences issued during the last five years, he suggested.
Briefing the standing committee of human rights, IG Sindh Ghulam Haider Jamali said Sindh Police could take pride as the cases of kidnapping have been curtailed. He informed that 10 accused were involved in Safoora Chowrangi bus attack while four of them have been arrested so far. The gang involved in targeting the Ismaili Community has the overall strength of 125 members, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Senate Committee chairperson Nasreen Jalil lauded the efforts of LEAs in eliminating crime from the city. She said Safoora incident had distressed the nation and the people involved deserve strict punishment. It is the need of the hour that all the stakeholders and political forces should play their role in bringing everlasting peace to Karachi. The committee would provide assistance in legislating law for peace in the city.
