Sindh govt to import detectors worth Rs15m

KARACHI - Despite huge financial crisis, Sindh government has decided to import five explosive detector machines worth Rs 15 million in lieu of security of Sindh Secretariat and Assembly, The Nation has learnt here on Wednesday. According to the report, the decision has been taken after the raising threats of terrorism. It is pertinent to mention here that intelligence agencies have warned, several times, the officials concerned to tighten the security across the Sindh Secretariat and other government installations. According to the letter obtained by The Nation, a meeting was held here over the prevailing security situation in which Waseem Ahmed, CCPO Karachi, has furnished information regarding purchase of five explosive detector machines and the estimated cost for one explosive detector is US$38,500 which is equal to Rs 2,926,000. As per decision of the meeting, the number of required machines is five and required funds are estimated at US$192500. However, the Finance Department is therefore requested to the authorities concerned for Rs 15 million on emergency basis to purchase the required machines which would be erected at two entry gates at the roads facing Sindh Secretariat No 1 and 2, one each at secretariat No 4-A and 4-B and Sindh Assembly gate.    While the Sindh Secretariat is the only building where thousands of people moving in and out on daily basis and over thousand people are also working in the building. The source said that vehicular traffic between the roads of secretariat building has already been banned and it has been decided by the authorities to allow only those vehicles of officials and staffers which have gate passes and stickers issued by the department for parking purposes.
