KARACHI - Gunmen shot dead a cop in Super Market police precincts on Sunday. Maqsood, 30, was on routine patrolling when the incident occurred.
SHO Shahnawaz Shahani said the victim policeman, along with his fellow policemen, was busy patrolling the area. Police party saw a suspicious motorcycle and signaled it for routine check when suspects, riding the motorcycle, opened fire and escaped leaving their motorcycle behind.
A cop was wounded in the incident. He was taken to a nearby private hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The body was later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy.
The officer said apparently it seems that the armed men were roaming in the area to rob the citizens when they were intercepted by the police. Further investigation is underway.
On the other hand, Sindh Home Minister Sohail Siyal also took notice of the incident and announced Rs2 million in compensation for the family of the slain policeman. A case has been registered. Meanwhile, Counter Terrorism Department on Sunday claimed to have arrested at least nine members of the banned militant outfit. The CTD officials said the arrests were made during two separate raids in SITE and Korangi areas.
CTD officials claimed that the raids were conducted on a tip-off. CTD in-charge Khurram Waris said the militants arrested belonged to Khan Zaman Mehsud group of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
He claimed to have recovered huge cache of weapons from the possession of the terrorists.
The suspects arrested included Naimatullah, Abdullah Jan, Sher Wali, Saeedullah, Samiullah, Amjad Khan, Bilal Khan, Irshad and Imran Khan. CTD in-charge Waris said the militants arrested had been involved in various cases of terrorism in the city. The suspects have been shifted to undisclosed location for further questioning.
86-KG HEROIN SEIZED,

The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Sindh has recovered 86-kg heroin from water dispensers and arrested three persons from the spot. The ANF official said on Sunday that the heroin was recovered in an intelligence-based inspection of export consignment of 43 water dispensers at Port Qasim. In another raid in Siraj Colony, Nazimabad, the ANF team arrested a person and seized 3.800-kg hashish from his possession. The ANF also conducted a raid in Ibrahim Haidery area and recovered 2.200-kg charas from a drug paddler. Further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) activists on Sunday staged demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC) and called for immediate release of party central leader Aurangzeb Farooqui. Carrying placards and banners inscribed with the demands including ‘stop victimisation of ASWJ’ and others, they chanted slogans against the rulers.
Addressing the participants of the protest, ASWJ leaders including Maulana Mohiuddin Shah, Allama Taj Hanfi, Maulana Khalid Mehmood and others warned continuation of party victimisation would force them to leave the peace policy and rulers would be responsible for any uncontrolled situation.
They said the provincial government had failed to provide any security to the ASWJ leaders and workers, and law enforcement agencies were not interested in taking action against the culprits involved. They further said that killers were roaming free and targeting their workers. The silence of the authorities has put a question mark on their creditability.
ASWJ leaders demanded the government to announce compensation for the victim workers and called for immediate release of the party central leader Aurangzeb Farooqui.
Talking about the Indian aggression, they were of the view that COAS General Raheel Sharif policies have once again uplifted the Kashmir issue. Pakistan armed forces and Pakistanis had given numerous sacrifices for peace in the region. International powers should take notice of the Indian aggression, they demanded.
