KPT hold Punjab to four-all draw in KPT-PFF Cup

KARACHI A timely equaliser in injury-time from striker Zaheer Abbas helped host Karachi Port Trust (KPT) play a thrilling four all tie against Punjab in the KPT-PFF Cup at KPT-Benazir Complex here on Tuesday. Zaheer Abbas struck in the second minute of the injury time to bright sigh of relief to the faces of the KPT supporters. It was first of the six Group-D matches in the 13-day competition. Karachi Port Trusts Chairperson Nasreen Haq was chief guest in colorful opening ceremony during which all the 16 teams presented march past in their official color. Four-time champions Pakistan Army were the first to appear on the pitch, followed by Balochistan, HBL, Islamabad, KESC, KPT, KRL, Navy, NBP, NWFP, Pak Steel, PEL, PIA, Punjab, Sindh and SSGC. The impressive march past was followed by glittering scene with the releasing of balloons and pigeons after recitation of the Holy Quran by Sajjad of KPT Boys Secondary School, Keamari, oath ceremony by KPT skipper Naseer Ahmed. The Sindh Culture Dance 'Tableau was also attraction of the day. A large number of people including women watched the proceedings. The participants of the opening ceremony admired the arrangements made for the 16-team event. While speaking on this occasion Nasreen Haq said that KPT is committed to providing facilities and teams for the promotion of games and sports. She said the KPT has been in the forefront of sporting activities in Pakistan and has contributed handsomely towards national teams in various disciplines. The match between 1990 NFCC champion KPT and eight-times national champions Punjab started in whirlwind fashion with three goals recorded inside 14 minutes. A one-minute silence was observed for the sad demise of KPT-based Pakistani international Abdul Khaliq as soon as the match kicked off by former FIFA Referee Jehangir Khan. The Portmen were the first to settle down and smashed two goals in as many minutes leaving Punjab keeper Waqas Rasheed and Punjab back-four stranded. Both their goals were the product of right wing movement. Striker Muhammad bin Younus opened the scoring in the 7th minute after Muhammad Waseem and Muhammad Ubaid had moved in concert. Hardly 55 seconds had elapsed, international front runner Zafar Majeed slotted the ball home after Muhammad Naveed had cut the ball in from right wing. Lady luck smiled on Bashir Ahmed-coached Punjab in the 14th minute when Sahiwal-born Khalid Khawar fired the ball past young keeper Ahsan Ullahs left hand but the ball rebounded back into play after kissing right upright. KPT fielded jersey No.66 Ahsan in place of first choice, PPFL-main keeper Sajid in the game. Ahsan is the produced of PFF Youth Development Scheme currently in progress throughout Pakistan under directives of PFF Chief Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat. Ahsan had a good match but he was beaten man in the 27th minute. Skipper Zaheer Abbas cut the ball back from zero angle and Khalid Khawar was on hand to hammer the ball past outstretched hands of Ahsan. KPT led 2-1 at interval and they regained two-goal advantage when Muhammad bin Younus struck his second in the 53rd minute. Punjab pulled one back in the 57th minute when Sargodha-born midfielder Babar Ahmed struck low drive into left corner. International midfielder Shahid Salim, who represented Pakistan in 13th Asian Cup Qualifiers at Jalan Besar, Singapore seven years ago, put the issue beyond in the 71st minute when he utilized spot-kick to make it 4-2. Midfielder Usman Zafar infused new spirit into Punjab with 87th minute goal and it was left to Zaheer to smash memorable goal in stoppages time to make it 4-4.
