KARACHI (PPI) - People have decried ten percent hike in train fares recently made by the Pakistan Railways, which has put a lot of financial burden on the pockets of poor who considered the trains as cheapest means of travel. Pakistan Railways have increased the fare through a notification for all classes effective from May 9, 2008. The schedule suggests that per person fare of air-conditioned class for Lahore from Karachi jumped to Rs2739 from Rs2490, business class fare to Rs1485 from Rs1350 and economy class to Rs561 from Rs510. It shows a difference of Rs249, Rs135 and Rs51, respectively. Air-conditioned class for Multan swelled from Rs1990 to Rs2189, while business class fare from Rs1070 to Rs1177 and economy class from Rs390 to Rs429. The difference stands Rs199, Rs107 and Rs39, respectively. Similarly, air-conditioned class fare for Rawalpindi from Karachi has jumped from Rs2850 to Rs3135, business class fare from Rs1570 to Rs1627 and economy class from Rs590 to Rs649 suggesting difference of Rs285, Rs157 and Rs59, respectively. Air-conditioned class fare for Peshawar from Karachi jumped from Rs3230 to Rs3553, business class from Rs1070 to Rs1107 and economy class from Rs690 to Rs759 showing difference of Rs323, Rs107 and Rs69, respectively. The fare of air-conditioned class for Quetta rose up to Rs2046 from Rs1860, fare in business class rose up to Rs1177 from Rs1070 and economy class from Rs350 to Rs385 showing difference of Rs186, Rs107 and Rs35, respectively. The fare in economy class from Karachi to Larkana and Khairpur has risen to Rs209 from Rs190, showing a difference of Rs19 each. The economy class fare for Hyderabad and Kotri has also jumped to Rs99 from Rs90 after hike of Rs9. The economy class fare for Jacobabad rose to Rs286 from Rs260 with an addition of Rs26. Fare for Shikarpur jumped from Rs230 to Rs253 after with difference of Rs23 via Rohri, while the fare for same via Dadu jumped from Rs250 to Rs275 after hike of Rs25. Similarly, the economy class fare for Moen-jo-Daro from Karachi has shot up to Rs198 from Rs180. It showed difference of Rs18. Divisional Commercial Officer, Kashif Rashid Yousfani, when contacted, confirmed that the hike in fares. "An overall increase of ten percent has been made in fare of all classes of all trains besides, fifteen percent in goods fares." The official told PPI that the increase had been made due to inflation in prices of petrol and diesel.
