Govt should consider rape victim’s plea





KARACHI  - Sindh High Court observed that Sindh government should consider on humanitarian grounds plea of a gang-rape victim, Kainat Soomro, who moved court for full payment of compensation as announced by Sindh Chief Minister. A division bench, headed by Justice Maqbool Baqir, passed this direction on petition seeking full payment of compensation to victim.
Her counsel, Faisal Siddiqui, submitted Sindh Chief Minister in August 2010 made announcement to pay Rs500,000 compensation to gang-rape victim Ms Soomro, who also lost her brother in struggle for justice. He stated Sindh Finance Department only paid Rs 300,000 to petitioner and remaining amount of Rs 200,000 was awaited.
He prayed to pass direction to respondent Secretary Finance to ensure payment of remaining compensation to petitioner.
Additional Advocate General Shafi Muhammad Memon submitted on court’s earlier direction a report was called from Sindh Finance department to explain why compensation amount was reduced, but same was still awaited. He requested for time to call same report.
SHC division bench observed that Sindh government should consider petitioner’s plea for compensation on humanitarian grounds. Adjourning hearing, it directed provincial law officer to submit report before September 18, 2012.
