KARACHI - Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research has deposited one million dollars, received from the German garments buyer KiK Textilien, in the account of Nazir of Sindh High Court on the directives of the SHC Commission headed by Justice (r) Rehmat Hussain Jafferi for distribution among the victims’ families of Ali Enterprises.
Piler had signed an agreement with the German buyer to provide cash compensation to those affected families who have still not received any compensation from the government or any other source.
The Piler through an application had requested the SHC to form a commission for distribution of compensation among the affected families. As a result SHC formed the Commission, which started functioning by late February. Through newspaper advertisements, the commission invited applications and currently it is finalising the list of the beneficiaries.
Under the agreement between PILER and KIK Textilien it was agreed that those who did not receive any sort of cash compensation will be supported in the first step. In the next step, a framework will be developed for long term relief for all, including assistance for the families of the deceased and unemployment allowance for the survivors.
Piler had received an initial amount of 250,000 dollars which was deposited in the SHC account and the remaining amount of 750,000 dollars was deposited on Tuesday as soon as it was received. The commission is now finalising the list and the disbursement would start very soon.
Piler and other labour rights and human rights organisations have jointly filed a constitution petition in SHC to seek justice for the victims.
