Karachi mayor’s wife demands his release

KARACHI - Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhter`s wife Naila Akhter, terming cases against her husband as pack of lies, has appealed to the judiciary to accept his bail and let him come out to serve the masses.

She was addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club (KPC) along with MQM legislators Sanjay Pirwani, Mehfooz Yar Khan and Mehmood Abdul Jabar here on Wednesday.

Drawing the attention towards the current municipal situation of the city, Naila said that infrastructure of Karachi had been destroyed and the city had turned into a garbage dump.

“If the concerned authorities are willing to open the case of May 12, 2007 then they should also summon the then president, Karachi mayor, Sindh governor, chief minister, Sindh IG, chief secretary and other key government officials of that time,” she demanded.

“Cases lodged against my husband are false. Therefore bail should be granted to him in all of these cases. Unfortunately, there is an unnecessary delay in settlement of these cases,” she regretted, and added that no cases were filed against Wasim before he was elected as mayor of the city. “But soon after his election, 20 cases were filed against him including burning of vehicles belonging to MQM, which are senseless,” she wondered.

She said that Wasim had gone abroad three times before his arrest, and every time, the court summoned him, he appeared before it.

Naila further recalled that the former chief justice had formed a seven-member larger bench to hear the case, but was later disposed of due to lack of evidence.

“Now suddenly, the case is being reopened,” she expressed the surprise.

“My husband is a patriotic Pakistani, and is associated with MQM-Pakistan of Farooq Sattar,” she concluded.
