KU turns into battlefield

KARACHI - A clash between workers of the People’s Students’ Federation (PSF) and Punjabi Students’ Association (PSA) at the University of Karachi left 12 students injured on Monday.
Educational activities came to a suspension when PSF and PSA workers charged each other with batons and rods, leaving 12 students injured. The scuffle erupted over the pasting of a Benazir Bhutto Football Tournament poster by the PSF near Admin Block. A PSF representative, Faisal Sheikh, claimed that the clash was flared up by the PSA.
He said that five PSF workers, including Basharatullah, were arrested initially, but after negotiations all of them were released.
Sources privy to the matter said the Rangers picked up workers of the PSF when its activists gave beating to certain paramilitary soldiers and ransacked KU administration block, including the vice-chancellor’s office.
Representatives of the PSA, however, dispelled the responsibility for the clash, saying the PSF was repeatedly asked not to paste posters at the said place.
Although the rangers and police rushed to the spot after the incident, they were also maltreated by workers of both the unions.
So, they were left with the only option of using teargas shells and batons to disperse the students.
Sub-Inspector Zulfiqar said workers of the two organisations got into a hot debate on Saturday that resulted in a scuffle on Monday.
Their fight suspended educational activities for three hours. He further said the situation was under control now.
