KARACHI – The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) started the 6th batch of Pharm D session 2013 at Dow College of Pharmacy (DCOP) here on the other day. An orientation session was organised to welcome and give introduction regarding the curriculum and its teaching methodology to the new entrants of Dow College of Pharmacy at Ojha campus. Javed Akhair, Chairman, PPMA was the chief guest whereas Dr Kaiser Waheed, former chairman, PPMA was the guest of honor. The session was attended by senior faculty members Prof Dr M Umer Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DUHS, Prof Dr Sumbul Shamim, Principal, Dow College of Pharmacy, Dr Haroon Qasim, CEO, PharmEvo, Muneer Anwar, CEO Martin Dow, students as well as their parent and guardians.Javed Akhair, Chairman, PPMA speaking as the chief guest on the occasion said that it was happy to know the Dow University had introduced new teaching and learning methodology which facilitated students to become skilled life long learners. The university strives for its students to develop better communication skills to communicate with their patients and prepare its students for a meritorious professional career. Pharmacists are an integral part of health delivery system and without them the goal of health for all cannot be achieved. Pharmacy is considered a life-saving profession worldwide. Similarly pharmacists also play a vital role in pharmaceuticals industry to look after the production, research and development, quality control, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, sales and marketing and many other capacities thereby leading to an improved overall performance and quality. He also appreciated the efforts of Vice Chancellor DUHS Prof. Masood Hameed Khan and his dedicate team for his dynamic leadership qualities in the establishment and the developments of the University in a very short span of time. He announced to sponsor one gold medal to top position holder of Dow College of Pharmacy every year. He also announced to sponsor one scholarship to the needy student who have financial constraint and enable to take admission in Pharm D. He also assured full support. Prof. M. Umer Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DUHS, in his address, welcomed the student’s of new batch. He informed the student about the progress of the University. He said that since its birth, the University has established a large number of high standards educational and research institutes in short span of time. The mission of the university is based on three domains which includes Academic excellence, human resources development and community healthcare.He further said that student have been bestowed a responsibility to serve human beings to facilitate them with a good health. DUHS has provided all possible facilities for creating pharmacists at par with the international standards. He advised the student to respect and pay due regarding to their parent and well as teacher because they are one who spread their entire in bringup their children. He also stressed to follow the rule and regulation of the University and be punctual as 90% of attendance is mandatory. Any suggestion or feedbacks regarding the college are welcome which will help the University to identify the deficiency by the students. Dr Sumbul Shamim, Principal, Dow College of Pharmacy in her welcome address gave a brief overview of Dow College of Pharmacy. She said that DCOP has been established to provide high competence pharmacy education to its students by utilizing rich resources provided by the university. The Pharm D curriculum is designed to produce a scientifically and technically competent pharmacist who can apply this education in such a manner so as to provide maximum health care services to patients. Students are provided with the opportunity to gain greater experience in patient’s close and cooperative relationships with health practitioners. It is the goal of all pharmacy schools / Institutes to prepare pharmacists who take up responsibility for the safety of patients and assures the provision of rational drug therapy. DCOP is well equipped with multimedia enabled lecture halls, fully equipped laboratories, quality management, instrumentation, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmaceutical biochemistry. Later on, Dr Qaiser Waheed, Former Chairman of PPA offered vote of thanks. In the end, Prof Dr Umer Farooq and Dr Sumbul Shamim presented DUHS memento to the chief guest and guest of honor.
