16 more peacocks die; death toll tops 80

KARACHI - Despite precautionary measures and efforts, poultry experts have not succeeded to overcome Rani Khait disease in peacocks which resulted into the death of 16 more peacocks raising the overall death toll to 83.
Rani Khait disease which spread in some areas of Tharparkar, three weeks ago, has so far claimed lives of about seven dozen precious peacocks.
The disease firstly initiated from Mithi area and later it turned into epidemic and engulfed the surrounding areas including Daiplo and Nangarparkar tehsils.
The Wildlife Department and four teams of poultry doctors were busy in the affected areas where affected peacocks were treated while others were vaccinated to save them of the dreadful diseases.
However, the local people expressing dissatisfaction over the medical teams have demanded sending more teams with experts and medicines to save the precious peacocks.
RS100M TO BE PROVIDED FOR DEVELOPMENT IN SHIKARPUR: Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah here the other day announced Rs 100 million funds for carrying out more development works in Shikarpur district.
He was talking to traders, MPAs, MNAs, office-bearers of PPP Shikarpur district and other notables at DCO office Shikarpur after a cabinet meeting, said a handout issued here.
The chief minister said cabinet meetings are being held in all the districts of the province on the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari. He said despite floods and record rains, historic development works have been undertaken in the province.
Shah said 90,000 jobs have been provided in the province, while over 100,000 youths have been trained in various fields, who have got jobs. The chief minister said women are also being provided training and they will be provided 25 per cent share in employment.
He pointed out that development works worth over Rs 5 billion have been undertaken in Shikarpur during the last four years, which include a Rs 600 million hospital project, power and gas supply to hundreds of villages, and construction of roads. Shah said Rs 12 billion worth programmes are being initiated to eradicate poverty and provide employment opportunities to youths. He said political orphans are joining hands in Sindh who could not cause any harm to the Pakistan Peoples Party, as the party’s roots are among the public.
The chief minister informed that Britain, China and Australia are making investment in Thar Coal project, and power generation will start through Thar coal by 2015.
