Ministers stay away from offices

KARACHI - The recent wave of suicidal attacks by militants in the country have forced the Provincial Ministers to stay away from their offices located in Sindh Secretariat. However, the Ministers have also limited their activities especially for sitting in the offices situated in New Sindh Secretariat building and Tughlaq House since terrorists attack on GHQ in Rawalpindi. This scribe visited the offices of Ministers in Sindh Secretariat and talked with the staff, who disclosed that security threats were behind the absence of ministers from their offices. During chat with TheNation, the staff of the Ministers offices, on condition of anonymity, told that after recent terror attacks and bomb blasts in the country, the provincial ministers preferred to stay away from the offices as well as they also limited their activities. They further said that a number of minister, while sitting at homes are disposing off their office work. The Provincial government has already announced red alert to prevent any terror attack in the City as offices of Provincial government Secretariat are also under threat. About dozens of ministers offices including the Senior Minister for Education Department Pir Mazharul Haq, Minister for Woks and Services Department Manzoor Hussain Wassan, Minister for Information Shazia Marri, Minister for Culture and Tourism Department Sassui Palijo, Minister for Women Development Department Tauqir Fatima Bhutto, Minister for Irrigation and Power Syed Murad Ali Shah, Food Minister Mir Nadir Ali Magsi and others are located in the New Sindh Secretariat building. Similarly, the offices of Minister for Agriculture Syed Ali Nawaz Shah, Minister for Excise and Taxation Department Mukesh Kumar, Minister for Katchi Abadies Rafiq Engineer and others are situated in the old Secretariat building, while offices of the other dozens of ministers and advisors are in the old KDA building near the Sindh Secretariat. At least two Provincial Ministers who did not want to be named, confirmed that they have limited their activities due to prevailing terror wave and security threats. However, the security has been beefed up at Sindh government offices in Sindh Secretariat, Sindh Assembly building and six blocks of various departments, where access of the visitors have also been made limited by law enforcement forces. Besides, the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) recently issued a memo and instructed all the employees of the Sindh government for displaying the office cards as mandatory to enter the Sindh Secretariat offices. Furthermore, the Sindh government has given all the powers to the Special branch police to not allow any officer and government employee without showing government office card. Meanwhile, the security measures at Sindh Secretariat have increased the problems for the visitors because the government has fixed 11:00am to 1:00pm as visiting hours for visitors who come from far-flung areas of the province, while sometimes the person whom they come to meet is not available in the office but they have to leave the Secretariat due to expiry of visiting hours. A visitor, Ghulam Mustafa who came from Naushero Feroze district to visit education Secretary office narrated the problems arise due to security measures said the officer concerned was not available during visiting hours so he has to come other day.
