KARACHI - Political leaders and intellectuals on Sunday opined that active politics was the only way to get the rights of the province. At the launching ceremony of “New Political Thinking”, authored by human rights activist and lawyer Rochi Ram, at a local hotel, the speakers emphasised the need for a political struggle for getting the rights of the province. Addressing the ceremony, Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah, chief of the Sindh United Party, said that controlled democracy prevailed in the country, which had not served to the masses. He said that the rulers had distorted the image of democracy to such an extent that the people had started hating the government.He underlined the need for initiating a political struggle until the people of Sindh get control of resources of the province in real terms. Shah said that independence of the Sindh was not in the interest of the people of Sindh currently, advising the political parties to unite to get rid from the oppressors. Shah criticised the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, saying the present government had not fulfilled its promise of “Roti, Kapra Aur Makan”, adding that the poor people had been deprived of medical and educational facilities. He said that since the inception of Pakistan, the resources of Sindh had been looted and plundered under different pretexts and all the income generating portfolios had been taken over by the federation.He said politics was not a business but was the name of social service and added that his party believed in serving the people and not loot and plundering. He said that present rulers have made politics as arm to loot and plunder the national wealth. Shah said that his party does not believe in traditional politics nor are we interested in ruling the country but we believe in service of the people.Rochi Ram, author of the book, said that politics was the only way to get rights of people. The chanting political slogans will not serve to the interest of the people, he said, adding that there is need to create political awareness among the people. Popular writer of Sindh Amar Jalil said that feudals have divided the Sindh in pockets. He called upon the people to rise against the feudalism.
