KARACHI - Senior Provincial Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq has said that the reconciliation philosophy of Benazir Bhutto has brought all political parties at one platform.
Speaking at the 20th Annual Convocation of the Karachi University (KU) held on Monday at the university campus, he said that there were several private universities in the metropolis which were working without following the rules and regulations of Higher Education Commission (HEC).
He said that Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan needed to be aware about such universities whose campuses could be seen everywhere in the City.
In the convocation, nearly 752 graduates were conferred upon degrees ranging from graduation to doctorate, in various fields of natural, social, management sciences and law.
Besides 77 gold medals were also awarded to graduates for excellent academic achievements.
It is worth mentioning that as many as 44 degrees have been awarded in BA (Honours), 47 in BSc (Honours), 18 BBA, 7 in BPA, 15 in BCom, 33 in BS, 5 in MPA, 11 in MCom, 160 in MA, 239 in MSc, 32 in MCS, 13 in MBA, 7 in MLIS, 18 in MPhil and 52 in PhD.
However, 51 degrees have been awarded to the students of evening shift.
Mazhar said that Benazir Bhutto had introduced the concept of setting up more new universities in the country and in the City as well.
"KU besides its academic responsibilities is very well delivering social services to the people of the country.
The approval of the Benazir Bhutto Chair and its subsequent conversion into Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute for Future Studies will further add an opportunity for scholars and researchers to study the contemporary social, political and economic problems faced by the country and the world at large," he added.
KU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim, in his speech, said that KU was recognised as a premier centre of learning and research in the sub-continent and in the third world He said, "The university has signed MoUs with foreign institutions for elevating research and calibre of our students and teachers, mostly with the facilities of scholarship offered by these institutions.
KU is a part of international consortium of seven international universities of Netherlands, China, Italy and France.
" This international consortium is soon going to launch MS programmes on climate change.
In an effort to brighten the talents of our students and our faculty, we are in interaction with the industrial sector so that our youth become adequately acquainted with the latest practical and theoretical needs of the industrial sector where challenging positions await our graduates.
Conferences, seminars and workshops at domestic, national and international level are held frequently to disseminate the value of humanities as well as natural, social and management sciences among our students.
Topics related to current global issues, concerns and developments are the themes of these events, from sports to justice, from economics to management and from environmental sciences to genetic engineering.
During the current year, nearly 125 such national and international academic events have been conducted at the university.
" The VC said that the university was trying hard to review its resource generation and management programme.
"The industries, corporate sector, all eminent entities and citizens of Karachi and the alumni of KU are requested to support the institution," he added.
