Cop among 8 shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI - At least eight people including a policeman were gunned down in various incidents of violence here Sunday.
Constable Mohammad Saeed, 50, succumbed to a target killing incident near Gulshan Chowrangi when he was going to home after completing his duty. Two armed men on a motorcycle targeted the cop and managed to flee from the scene after killing him on the spot. Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police Station SHO Mohammad Irfan said that the assailants also took the cop’s official sub machinegun away with them while fleeing.
His funeral was offered at Police Headquarters, Garden and later the body was moved to his hometown Hazara division for burial. A case has been registered against unidentified persons. Separately, two armed men riding a motorcycle gunned down a 17-year-old fisherman namely Saifullah alias Munna in Jumma Goth within the limits of Ibrahim Hyderi Police Station. The deceased was standing near to his home when he was attacked over unexplained reasons. A youth was shot dead and two others were wounded when armed men opened fire at a restaurant in Sindhi Muslim Society within the limits of Ferozabad Police Station. The deceased was identified as 35-year-old Waqar and the injured as Nasim and Vikram.  SHO Safdar Mashwani said that the incident apparently took place over personal enmity while further investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, a youth was found dead in Pak Colony area. Police officials said the body carrying bullet injuries was placed in a gunny bag. Police moved the body to morgue, Sohrab Goth for identification.
In another incident, four persons of a family were gunned when they offered resistance to drunkard bandits who barged into a house in Maripur, raped a girl and boy, and attempted to kidnap them afterwards.  According to police, some drunkard gangsters barged into the house and held the whole family hostage on gunpoint. They rapped a girl and boy and tried to the take them away.
When the family offered resistance, the gangsters opened firing, killing 45-year-old Muzaffar, his wife Shazia and two sons Sameer and Imran on the spot. While their 18-year-old daughter Muniza also sustained bullet injuries in the incident. The gangsters managed to flee from the scene after the incident.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and moved the bodies and injured to civil hospital for medico-legal formalities. Later, the injured girl was referred to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.  The victim couple’s two daughters and a son aged between five to eight years remained safe in the incident. Muniza, who was married recently, had arrived to visit her parent’s home when the incident took place. She in her initial statement to police said that some fully drunk armed men barged into their house and subjected her and her brother to gang rape at the gunpoint.  “Afterwards, the gangsters sought to take us to somewhere on which we offered resistance,” she said adding that the gangsters opened indiscriminate fire on us, injuring my parents, me and my two brothers.” When contacted, DSP Sohail Afzal said that the area is dominated by Lyari gangsters but reason behind the tragedy is yet to be ascertained. Police have yet to register the case because the victim girl could not give her proper statement and doctors intervened due to her critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.  Following the incident, a large number of the victims’ relatives and people of the vicinity staged a protest, chanting slogans against the police for not taking stern action against the gangster’s hideouts in the area.  A 5-year-old boy, who had gone missing, was recovered after police raided a house in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. A woman namely Fakhira was also arrested from the house for her alleged involvement in the abduction.
Police officials said that they raided the house after the neighbours of Fakhira informed police about the boy, adding that it was not a kidnapping case as the boy’s family did not receive any ransom call.
Police officials said that apparently the accused woman seems to be a psycho patient and further investigation is underway.
