Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Monday again made it clear that appropriate legal action would be taken against alleged US national Raymond Davis stressing entire matter lies with Foreign Ministry. Federal Interior Minister has urged the media to avoid assumptions, as the government will not be lenient in seeking any action according to the law. Talking to reporters after law and order meeting at CM House and meetings with DG FIA in National Crisis Management Cell, DG Coastguard and DG Rangers Malik said that the Raymond case is subjudice and all should have to wait for a report from the Punjab government. He said once the status of Raymond Davis is confirmed the government would take action accordingly. Rehman Malik said that Rangers have been given powers of police and we are getting great results. In 2 weeks only three incidents of target killing took place and in 24 hours no incident of target killing has occurred, adding that not every murder is target killing. He said as we finished target killings we would also bring an end to extortion culture. Warning extortionists to become sensible otherwise they would be eliminated Rehman Malik said. Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah decided to form a task force to eradicate extortion rings. Interior minister said that the task force will be formed within three days. He also expressed his resolve to rid city of extortionists. He was of the view that Karachi is an economic hub adding whenever there is lawlessness, traders and businessmen are badly affected. On the occasion, Qaim Ali Shah said that not every killing should be termed targeted since Karachi is a big city where crime usually occurs. Extortion rackets came under the spotlight after reports said that the Shershah scrap market incident, which claimed the lives of 13 innocent men, took place after failed 'negotiations between an extortion group and the Shershah market association. Karachi has seen increasing violence this month after Wali Khan Babar, a young reporter, was killed after being shot five times when he was on his way home, he urged. The Rangers force then conducted a sweeping unannounced search operation in Orangi Town resulting in the arrest of over 400 suspects. In the meantime CCPO Karachi while giving a detailed briefing to Interior Minister said that 8 target killing incidents took place from January 01 till January 12 in various areas in Karachi. He went on to say that 88 innocent lives have been lost in target killing and other heinous incidents during 30 days in January. He further said that some 29 culprits have been arrested from January 1 till January 30.
