'SC can't amend Constitution'

LAHORE - PPP's Punjab Secretary Finance Aurangzeb Burki has said that Supreme Court has no authority to make amendment in the Constitution, as this is the sole prerogative of the Parliament. Talking to reporters in his office along with Secretary Information Peoples Labour Bureau Punjab, Muhammad Saleem Mughal, here on Thursday, PPP leader said his party's government held judiciary in high esteem, but Supreme Court should also show a similar reciprocity in respect of Parliament, a representative institution of 160 million people. He hoped that apex court would not take any step leading to creation of mistrust among state institutions. Burki said government was facing a challenging task of rehabilitation of flood affectees, and would not tolerate any hurdles in its way to fulfil this responsibility. Under such circumstances, the people of Pakistan expect that no institution would make any adventure at this point in time. He said nation would not tolerate any unconstitutional change. He said PPP would not make any compromise on country's security and democracy. The PPP leader accused PML-N of trying to enter power corridors through back doors, and said it would not succeed in its designs. He said Nawaz Sharif had disappointed the nation by his recent statements.
