Faraz raised voice against injustice, tyranny: speakers

LAHORE - A condolence reference was held at the Lahore Press Club on Sunday in memory of renowned poet Ahmed Faraz and leading Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish both of whom, passed away in August. Faraz has written both romantic poetry as well as revolutionary poetry of the highest standard. He was considered the greatest poet of Pakistan after Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Darwish was a Palestinian cultural icon well respected among supporters of the Palestinian cause. His poetry is considered the voice of all Palestinians, the voice of resistance against the occupation and the voice that rejects infighting. The speakers at the meeting included Bushra Rehman, Hussain Naqi, Imtiaz Alam and Aitbar Sajid. They paid glowing tributes to Faraz and Darwish for their contribution to literature and raising voice against injustice and tyranny. Rehman said poets and writers are always sensitive people. "They feel the pain of their people and the gross injustice done to them. When they write they reflect the world around in a very convincing way. Darwish wrote poetry in Arabic. I have read some of the translations. The issues he touches and the agony he shares are the same that Faraz speaks about in his revolutionary poetry. "They minutely delve into the human attitudes and spirit and touch the hearts of people with their poetry. "Both have urged their nations to wake up from slumber. The vacuum left by them will never be filled. They would continue to live in the hearts of people for years to come," she said. Naqi was of the view that both poets lived in the land that was occupied. "Whether it is poetry or journalism the writers have to face problems. Both Faraz and Darwish suffered due to their democratic views and support for the rights of people," he said.
