LAHORE - The City received downpour on Saturday, bringing the life to a standstill as the rainwater inundated on roads not only in low-lying areas but also in several posh localities. Lahore received 13 mm rain. The rains started at around 2:40 and continued for more than an hour, submerging a number of roads into knee-deep rainwater. It took hours to Water and Sanitation Agency to clear rainwater from a number of City roads. Sir Agha Khan Road, Garhi Shahu, Mughalpura, Abbot Road, Railway Road, Gwalmandi, Shadbagh, Misri Shah, Ghoray Shah, Do Moria Pul, Dil Muhammad Road, Tajpura, Shahra-e-Fatima Jinnah, GPO Chowk, Lakshmi Chowk, Sanda Road, Lake Road, Muhammad Nagar, Bhati Gate, Shahdara, Data Nagar and Lawrence Road were the worst affected areas. These localities were seen submerged in knee-deep water even hours after stoppage of rain. The inundated rainwater created problems for the motorists and pedestrians, especially for women and children. The people going back to home from offices faced great hardships. The cars and motorcycles were seen broken down on a number of roads due to inundated rainwater. Massive traffic jams were witnessed on a number of important City roads due to inundated rainwater on roads and roadsides. Several incidents of skidding of motorcycles were also reported from various parts of the City. PSO to the Punjab Chief Minister Khawaja Imran Raza said that the low-lying areas were cleared from rainwater within record time. He said that timely and unprecedented desilting of drains, rehabilitation of infrastructure, proper management and supervision made this to happen. Referring to the Lakshmi Chowk, he said that the rainwater was pumped out from the chowk within couple of hours, which he termed major achievement of Wasa. The rains and windy conditions turned the weather pleasant by causing considerable decrease in the mercury level. Major parks and picnic spots attracted a large number of people including women and children. A great rush was witnessed at Bagh-e-Jinnah, Racecourse Park, Jallo Park, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Lahore Zoo and other picnic spots in the City in the evening. On Saturday, maximum and minimum temperature in the City was recorded 35 degree Celsius and 26.3 C respectively. Relative humidity in the morning was recorded 75 per cent, which decreased to 54 per cent in the evening. According to the experts, seasonal low lies over northeast Balochistan and adjoining areas. Weak southwest monsoon current is penetrating Punjab up to 5000 feet. Local meteorological department has forecast partly cloudy weather for the City during the next 24 hours. Met office has forecast mainly dry weather for most parts of the country during the next 24 hours. However, isolated rains are expected over Gujranwala, Lahore, Rawalpindi divisions and Kashmir. On Saturday, Jassar received 33 mm rain, Dhokpathan 20 mm, Islamabad 16 mm, Mangla and Kund 08 mm each, Marala, Dratian and Rawlakot 06 mm each, Ravi Syphon and Kotli 03 mm each, Kallar and Kakul 02 mm each, Kotli and Alexandra Bridge 01 mm each while Karachi received traces of rain.
