Nominal fuel quantity renders police inefficient

LAHORE - Over 600 cases of different natures were registered with the Racecourse Police during the first nine months of the current year, of which 400 remained unresolved due to inefficiency and other problems - top of which was the unavailability of fuel, as it made it impossible for the law enforcement agency personnel either to chase the criminals or carry out investigation. According to statistics obtained by TheNation, about 20 robbery cases, two of murder, four of car-snatch, 12 of car-theft and 30 cases of bike-theft were the prominent among the registered cases. No case of dacoity or gang rape was registered at the police station during the corresponding period. Out of the total, about 22 cases were found bogus while 40 cases were disposed of due to certain reasons. During the same period, the Racecourse Police recovered eight bikes, two cars and busted four criminal gangs. Similarly, the Operations Wing arrested 129 Proclaimed Offenders (POs), 66 Court Absconders (ACs) and 73 history-sheeters while the Investigation Wing apprehended 233 POs, 157 ACs and 52 history-sheeters. Currently the Racecourse Police Station has strength of about 105 personnel - one Inspector, nine Sub-Inspectors (SIs), seven Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs), nine Head Constables (HCs) and 79 Constables, Station House Officer (SHO) Taimur Malik told, adding that the PS was still facing a shortage of 16 approved constables. There are two lockups at the police station, situated opposite to each other in the main entrance - one for male while the other is reserved for female. Both the lock-up have two (one each) small washrooms. Two security cameras have been installed on the premises of the police station to avert any terror attack. The police station has huge precincts, stretching from Basti Syden Shah to Qurban Lines, Governors House, Muslim League House, Crown Cinema area and the area lies from Railway Station to Fountain Bridge. The major issue of police station, some of the police officers disclosed while requesting anonymity, was shortage insufficient quantity of fuel, allowed to them. Can you imagine every SHO has been granted only two litre of diesel per day, they revealed and added that under the circumstances, how one can ensure effective patrol from dawn to dusk. One of the officers alleged that though there were funds available with the CCPO office, their request always met with silence whenever they made any demand in this regard. SHO Taimur Malik, however, said the PS had sufficient number of officers and that they were concentrating to improve the performance further. He was of the view that the Racecourse Police had chalked out an effective mechanism to curb crime in the areas, falling in its jurisdiction.
