LAHORE - Lahore University of Management Sciences Journalism Festival has brought in distinguished journalists meet in Lahore.
According to a press release, the festival consisted of workshops by renowned journalists from all over Pakistan. It further included three competition events for delegates to enjoy some activities apart from the informative workshops.
The festival was organised by the LUMS Daily Student – the journalism society of LUMS. Featuring a diverse range of delegates from students to faculty members and aspiring media personnel, the festival began with an official welcome to the delegates from the host team at the opening ceremony.
News anchor Maria Memon spoke about the different preferences of the audience when it came to the type of broadcast journalists they liked listening to.
Following the broadcast event, the second and last workshop for day one was Yellow Press and Peril by Sonya Rehman. After terming yellow journalism as ‘misinformation’, Rehman pointed out how unfortunate it was that our media has become biased, political and dramatic. The second and final day of LJF began with a panel discussion on sectarianism and our media. The panelists included anchor Ajmal Jami, and lawyer Saad Rasool, who is a graduate from the Harvard Law School. Discussion began with Jami telling the audience how difficult it is in Pakistan to speak up and report on issues of sectarian violence.
The next workshop on day two was Column Writing by Mehr F Hussain. This session was very interactive and was led by delegates’ questions. Mehr told them about the importance of having their own blogs and having a conversation with their readers.
The last workshop for the day was Media and Democracy with journalists, Mubasher Bukhari and Ataul Musawwir. Both speakers reiterated how important media was for democracy. Mubasher Bukhari was the guest speaker at the closing ceremony. The event heads, Momina Mindeel and Ali Burney, also addressed the delegates. The delegates were also awarded their certificates and winners of Broadcast Event, Photo Event and Journalism Trivia were awarded shields.
